"I will add the energy consumption details of at least five electrical items in my house to the AMEE climate change database but only if 500 other people will do the same (or better)."

AMEE is a big database which helps people and companies calculate their carbon footprints. They've just started accepting details about products entered by users, and it seems worth a few minutes to add to a useful public resource. Check out the details here:

AMEE just isn't ready for this. You *can't* point people at the links you have and expect them to have a clue what to do.
http://www.amee.cc/?p=147 cryptically suggests I enter my own data. "all" I have to do is make a free account at http://wiki.amee.cc/index.php/User (what they mean is presumably make a wiki account on the wiki and then use that page).
Having made a wiki account I then wonder what on earth I should do. http://wiki.amee.cc/index.php/User is totally obscure. What if what I have doesn't fit that category (answer: I have to make some up and edit the wiki - most people aren't going to want to / be able to do that).
The meat is surely here:
http://wiki.co2.dgen.net/andrew/wiki_upd...
(which seems to have nothing to do with the wiki). At which point I realise that, enthusiastic though I might be, this is a pointless exercise as I don't have a meter.
Thanks for the feedback - we're here to listen.
Yes you just need to make an account on the wiki. No it's not like wikipedia because it's data, and data needs more structure than linking words. However, one of the reasons for doing this is to get feedback from everyone on the best approach.
You don't need a meter - the drop down allows; "label on product", "manufacturer spec", "other".
We'll also be adding a whole bunch of categories within the next few days to cover other types of devices (e.g. laptops).
Please keep the feedback coming.
Best
Gavin
